Types of Scars & Skin Conditions We Work With

Scars come in all shapes and sizes, with their own unique stories.  Understanding your scar type is the first step toward choosing the right treatment.  These are some of the most common conditions we treat with paramedical tattooing and inkless techniques.

Skin Science 101

Understanding your skin helps you make informed decisions throughout the healing process.  Here are a few basics every client should know:

  • Your skin is your body's largest organ. Its main role is to protect all your internal organs, muscles and bones.  It also helps regulate your body temperature, supports immune response, and acts as a barrier against bacteria, UV damage, and environmental toxins.
  • Your skin has 3 main layers: epidermis (outermost layer), dermis (middle layer), and hypodermis (deepest layer, mostly fat and connective tissue).
  • Most camouflage tattooing targets the dermis, where ink stays semi-permanently, but the revision aspect of paramedical tattooing focuses on the uppermost epidermis layer.  Both layers require knowledge and different techniques based on what our focus is that day (revitalizing the scar tissue versus camouflaging the remaining scar).
  • Scars form when normal healing is disrupted, whether by injury, surgery, or inflammation.  The skin's ability to repair itself depends on both genetics and aftercare.
  • Collagen and Elastin are your skin's natural rebuilding proteins and are found in the dermis (middle layer).  Collagen provides the skin with its strength while elastin allows the skin to stretch -- inkless tattooing techniques and red light therapy help stimulate the growth of these two proteins.
  • Hydrated skin means healthy skin.  Sun protection and proper aftercare are key to your healing and will make a major difference in your long-term results.
